Special Olympics World Summer Games 2018

Every two years the Special Olympics holds its World Games. Alternating between Summer and Winter Games, the Special Olympics World Games is usually – and certainly will be in 2019 in Abu Dhabi – the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world that year.

The World Games in Abu Dhabi, capital city of the United Arab Emirates, will be the largest, most spectacular and inspiring in history.

  • 7,000 athletes
  • 2500 coaches and delegates
  • 170 participating nations
  • 20,000 volunteers
  • 24 sports
  • 4,000 Honored Guests
  • 6,000 Family Members
  • 500,000 plus spectators on site, with millions watching globally

The 2019 Games begin with a star-studded Opening Ceremony on 14 March in the iconic Zayed Sports City Stadium in the heart of Abu Dhabi, the largest sports venue in the Gulf. (Watch this site or our Facebook page for news about the celebrities and entertainment appearing during the Opening Ceremony.) The emotional climax of every World Games Opening Ceremony is the Parade of Athletes, each delegation following its placard proudly to share their pride and excitement.

In addition to the over 7,000 hours of sports competition the Games will feature host several non-sports activities and programs, including Healthy Athletes free health screenings for all team members, a GenUin Global Youth Summit, Global Policy Summit and Dialogue, the Special Olympics Festivals, Family and Honored Guests Hospitality Centers, Live and Play Unified Fan Zones at every sports venue, Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg and the Special Olympics Dance Challenge.
